Hilfsgemeinschaft der Blinden und Sehschwachen is Austria's largest organisation for people with severe visual impairments, offering information and expert advice. Making that information accessible was essential, and even back then, an appealing design helped convince critics that accessibility and good web design go hand in hand.
During concept work we developed the information architecture and navigation design that the visual design was ultimately built on. Strong recognisability between the main site and Augengesundheit.at was meant to strengthen the brand, achieved through a multisite concept that minimises support and update effort. The sites run on Drupal 7 using Panels. After the frontend was finished, the agency ran internal tests first, before people with visual impairments carried out a final round of testing to guarantee compliance with WCAG 2.0 AA criteria. This was one of our first accessible websites, and we learned a lot, though our takeaway was simple: accessibility isn't rocket science, it's just following coding standards.
